Batman’s Lost Catchphrase

I noticed that in issue #473 of Detective Comics Batman briefly adopts a particularly jerky catchphrase for two consecutive pages and then drops it forever. The first use, seen below, made me laugh as hard as anything in 2011 because of how you never see his face, and how callously he crushes Robin’s glee at having worked out The Penguin’s latest scheme, and of course for the look on Robin’s face when Bats shouts at him:

Jesus that expression on Dick’s face just kills me. God bless you Marshall Rogers. So like I said, a page later Batman appears again, and once more shows his utter contempt for the lesser intellects:

It says a lot about my sense of humour that I found this pair of panels funnier than any scene in any comedy film of the last 12 months. Why wouldn’t Batman just ignore the woman on the plane, and why is it funnier that it’s a woman. Why is it funnier that you never see his face? WHY IS HE SO MEAN?

I love it.

Speaking of 2011, I think I’ll do a little ‘best of 2011′ pretty soon so’s I have some sort of proof of my own opinions to call back on in faltering later years.
